At that time, As I Am first week’s sales served as the largest opening debut week for any female R&B albums and one of the largest opening weeks for any female album across any genre. As I Am became her fourth #1 album to debut at the top of the charts selling over 742,000 copies in its first week. She returned with new music in 2007 with the album As I Am. The live album received a platinum plaque for Alicia and it also debuted at the top of the billboard 200 making her 3rd #1 album. In 2005, she released a live album entitled Unplugged proceeded by the single Unbreakable (#34). The album to date has sold approximately 5 million copies in the States while also achieving platinum status in numerous other countries worldwide. TDOAK (abbreviated) is regarded by many fans as her greatest body of work. It was succeeded by the successful singles You Don’t Know My Name (#3), If I Ain’t Got You (#4), Diary (#8), and Karma (#17). Alicia’s second studio album sold 618,000 copies in its first week debuting at the top of the charts yet again. She released her next studio album in 2003 entitled The Diary of Alicia Keys. The success of this album built up a lot of anticipation for her next release! The album experienced platinum success in other markets as well. To date the album has sold over 7 million copies in the United States alone while also achieving multi platinum success in the UK, Canada, and Australia. It was also supplemented by the singles A Woman’s Worth (#7) How Come You Don’t Call Me (#59) and Girl Friend (#82 R&B). However, due to word of mouth and the monster success of her single Fallen (#1) the album sales increased and the album sold an additional 450,000 copies in it’s second week with sales declining very minimally throughout the year. It was released in 2001 and debuted at #1 selling slightly over 230,000 copies in its first week. While many artists will eventually age out of the popular sector of music and different trends tend to take over, I think Alicia’s career was heavily effected by other factors.Īlicia Keys first made waves with her iconic album Songs in A Minor. Alicia Keys has been in the music industry for nearly 20 years and, while it’s natural for an artist to eventually decline in the mainstream market, I always believed Alicia’s decline just happened abruptly and not gradually like other popular music stars in her era. I haven’t done one of these post in a while but I decided to do one on Alicia Keys because she is one of the biggest selling female R&B artist of her era.
